Week of Aug. 27-31

Monday, Aug 27:
Learning Target:
  • Explore context clue strategy: Look for what kind of object, concept or action the word is
  • Use context clues to establish new meaning of unknown words
Class Procedure:
  • Copy HW in agenda
  • Collect HW: signed syllabus and Facebook Profile page
  • Using permanent marker, write name on Popsicle Stick.
  • Word Wisdom Unit 1 Part 1 pretest-- Correct & discuss answers.
  • Introduce context clue strategy. Read & complete pages 7-9 together as a class.
  • Return graded summer reading tests. Notice +1 Dojo on some papers! :)
  • Watch ClassDojo video (wiki page) and discuss possible inducements.
HW:
  • No HW due tomorrow.
  • Complete pages 10-11 in Word Wisdom due Wednesday
  • Prepare for U1P1 post test on Friday
  • Supply check tomorrow!

Tuesday, Aug 28:
Learning Target:
  • Practice/Review the use of commas around dates, run-on sentences, and editing misspelling in print
  • Continue to use context clues to establish new meaning of unknown words.
  • Respond to literal and critical-thinking questions on an Independent reading book (Nothing but the Truth)
  • Collaborate with peers, engage in discussion and work towards common goal
Class Procedure:
  • Copy HW into agenda.
  • MUG Shot. Identify and correctly edit four errors in the following sentence: Until April 8 1974 Babe Ruth held the American record for home runs he held the record for baces on balls until April 26 2001.
  • Continue/Finish "Unlocking the Meanings" on page 8-9 in Word Wisdom
  • Supply Check. Please be sure to have the following items in class DAILY:
    • pencil
    • blue or black pen
    • an editing utensil (colored pen/pencil/marker that is NOT blue or black)
    • loose-leaf paper
    • a binder or a folder with brads
    • (Be sure to obtain a USB drive for future use as well!)
  • Divide class into random groups by colored Popsicle sticks.
    • Discuss Nothing but the Truth using questions provided by teacher
    • Class Dojo opportunity
  • Distribute & discuss alternative-ending assignment.
HW:
  • Word Wisdom pages 10-11 due Wednesday
  • Study for Unit 1 Part 1 Post Test on Friday
  • Nothing but the Truth alternate-ending assignment due next Wed 8/5/12 (will accept it early on Tuesday 8/4/12 for +Dojo Pts)

Wednesday, Aug 29:
Learning Target:
  • informally assess use of context clues to establish new meaning
  • review and implement rules of comma usage, capitalization and spelling using a MUG Shot
  • assess current knowledge/review figurative language and parts of speech.
  • verbally explain interactions & conflicts between characters and minor characters in literary text
  • Identify main and minor events of the plot, and explain how each incident gives rise to the next.
Class Procedure:
  • Copy HW into agenda.
  • MUG Shot. Identify and correct the three errors: Would you believe that over 7000 years ago Ancient Egyptians liked to bowl on alleys alot like ours?
    • Correct answers
  • Take figurative language quiz
    • Correct answers, discuss results
  • Work on NTB alternative-ending assignment, if time.
HW:
  • No HW due tomorrow.
  • Study for post test on Friday.
  • Continue working on NTB alternate-ending assignment due next Wednesday.

Thursday, Aug 30:
Learning Target:
  • (Re)Introduce figurative language elements, meaning and examples such as simile, metaphor, onomatopoeia, personification, alliteration & hyperbole
Class Procedure:
  • Copy HW into agenda.
  • Bell work on SMART Board: arrange words into proper parts of speech lists.
  • Take interactive notes on figurative language using SMART board.
  • Independent work time to work on NBT alternative-ending assignment.
HW:
  • Study for tomorrow's U1P1 post test
  • NBT alternative-ending assignment due Wed 8/5

Friday, Aug 31:
Learning Target:
  • demonstrate knowledge of U1P1 words and use of context clue strategy
  • meet the Media Center specialist
  • Become orientated to the Media Center
Class Procedure:
  • Copy HW into agenda
  • Take U1P1 Post test
  • Receive Independent Reading assignment---discuss.
  • Media Center Orientation & tour
  • Complete and submit Media Center Orientation Exit Slip before end of class.
HW:
  • Media Center Orientation Exit slip due before end of class
  • NBT/Summer Rdg alternative-ending assignment due Wed, 8/5 (or Tuesday 8/4 for +Dojo Pts)
  • Choose a book for independent reading assignment. Have it and bring it to class BY next Friday, 8/7. Coinciding independent reading assignment due: __ (TBA)
